Cupid’s Nest will charm the love of your life. Cupid is everywhere to be found in this romantic retreat. The warm atmosphere of  this historic cottage can now be enjoyed in the ensuite bathroom and the bedroom. Warm your toes with the lovely woodfire. Walk out your front door and into the fabulous tree lined street of Ross. Outside the glazed back door the lovely sandstone patio and garden greet you. Cupid’s land backs onto the Macquarie river. Take a walk through the back gate, share a bottle of your favourite wine at the private “lurve seat” at the river’s edge and enjoy watching the river birds.
In 2009 we uncovered the sandstone walls from behind timber lining revealing sandstone chosen with wonderful reds and yellows.  They have been covered for well over 100 years. After months of restoration, guests can now enjoy the handy work of the low security convicts. Your spacious living area has comfortable couches, open fire, dining area and a kitchenette. The exposed sandstone bedroom and bathroom walls offer a unique and romantic experience. Cupid’s Nest shares the same wonderful 1830 sandstone ex-convict barracks as Captain Samuel’s Cottage.

Why the name “Cupid’s Nest?

In Roman Mythology anyone shot with cupids’ arrow falls in love with the first person they see. Cupid had his little nest where he seduced Psyche and lived happily ever after.

Interesting History

Early in the 1800’s a wealthy merchant seaman Captain Samuel Horton decided to hang up his sextant and settle in Ross. He became well known for many achievements, one being having a magnificent Methodist college built on his land and having it named after himself, Horton College. He also purchased this stone cottage in the main street of Ross. The government had finished using it as a low-security convict barracks. This building, located on the banks of the Macquarie River later became famous as “Captain Samuel’s Cottage” where tourists stay instead of convicts. In 2009 the building has been divided so that Cupid’s Nest may occupy the Northern portion. As well as being a convict barracks, the cottage has been a grindstone shop, butchery, antique shop and private home. Built Circa 1830, it represents one of the oldest buildings in Australia
